Janet Parker

JANET PARKER OSNU SNU CSNU

Janet Parker is recognised medium who works diligently and with sincerity, bringing knowledge of life after death wherever she goes.

Janet was born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1949. She then went on to live in Durham, Stoke on Trent and now resides in Harrogate North Yorkshire. Having been married to Trevor for nearly 40 years, they have two sons and three young granddaughters.

Janet’s father came from a mediumistic family and consequently it was no surprise when Janet displayed the sensitivity faculties. As a child Janet was greatly influenced by her paternal grandmother, this grandmother was one of 11 children. Eliza Maud Mary was very interested in knowing about the Spirit World and her sister Gertrude was a medium. As a child Janet would listen to all the fascinating stories about the “spooky” things that went on. Janet was to understand table rapping as a normal procedure when contacting the spirits whilst she was a child.

Janets’ own father and his brother were also mediumistic. It was not until after her father died that she moved much more towards Spiritualism.

Janet was 27 when her father died and 37 when she first started to work with her mediumship. Janet was taken to a Spiritualist church by her mum and her mum's great friend, Lily. Lily is the mother of Jackie Trent the singer. They took her there because there was an auction on, and at that time Janet had a small second-hand and antique business. The auction however was preceeded by a Spiritualist Service of Clairvoyance and for Janet it was an epiphany. She felt as if she had come “home”. All the strange dreams that she constantly had, all the strange feelings that she constantly felt and all the strange words that seemed to enter her head as if by magic, everything seemed to be falling into place.

Janet has worked in Switzerland, Italy, Holland, Sweden Denmark Germany America and Canada. The Arthur Findlay College in Stansted, Essex is where Janet teaches courses in Great Britain. The college is open all the year round for courses, which help people develop their psychic and mediumistic skills. The Spiritualist National Union owns the college. Although Spiritualism is a recognised religion, the college is open to all denominations.

Janet is recognised within the Spiritualist movement as an Officiant, in other words she conducts weddings, funerals and naming ceremonies, etc. Janet is presently in her Ministerial Training. She also holds awards for being a recognised Teacher of the Union. This award is for people who have qualified in teaching teachers and not just teaching students. Janet holds a certificate in speaking and in demonstrating mediumship from the Spiritualist National Union.

When Janet works in Italy, she works mostly for a foundation, which helps families who have children in the Spirit World. There can be as many as 800 people who come to these demonstrations in Italy.

Janet is a lecturer and course organiser at the Arthur Findlay College for French Week and Swiss Week. Her students come from their various countries to Stansted to sample the glorious surroundings and to experience a week of Spiritual Awareness.

Janet often works with her good friend and colleague Paul Jacobs, they work in totally different ways and yet their students find that their teaching compliments each others. They have done many charity events together and especially charities for Childrens Hospices. In Oct. 2003 they raised £5000 for a hospice in Stoke on Trent by presenting an evening of clairvoyance with Mavis Pittilla another fine medium and friend of both of them, at the Victoria Hall in Stoke on Trent. The event was attended by over 900 people.

Being an Minister of the National Spiritualists Religion means I am licensed to officiate at Weddings, Funerals and Namings. Naming ceremonies are the equivalent of the Christian Baptism Service.

It was in 1992 that I decided after very much consideration to dedicate my life to Spiritualism. At that time I had my official Naming Ceremony and Gordon Higginson the President of the Union undertook the service. My Spirit name which was given to me was Hope. He told me ‘The name your parents chose for you is the name that you will be known throughout this life unless you yourself make changes. The name that I give to you is directed from Spirit and is the name belonging to your Soul’. He told me I had come to bring Hope to the world and although there may be times when I would find myself in darkness, never to be afraid for I would be able to shed light. Beautiful words but such a great responsibility.

I have taken many wedding, naming and funeral services over the years and it is always a privilege to be part of the journey in such a way. I have married people at the Sanctuary of the Arthur Findlay College. I have married people in Spiritualist Churches all over the country and even in a Marquee in someone’s huge garden.

When we name children we do not use water as in Christian ceremonies. The water is symbolic of cleansing a child of their sins. As Spiritualists we believe that when children enter our world they are pure and therefore we tend to use flowers, or petals in the case of small babes. Each Minister will have their own particular way of conducting the service. The naming of adults requires that the applicant is prepared to change their religion and adopt the principles of Spiritualism. Funeral services have been undertaken in Spiritualist Churches, Crematoriums and Chapels within Cemetery grounds. For me a funeral is the last living thing that we can give to someone who has made their journey home. It is always an honour to be asked to perform such a service.

My Official duties are very important to me and I always try to make sure that each person I represent gets the best service that I can offer them.

"Our biggest mistake is to try and get out of people
those virtues that they do not have
and to neglect to cultivate those that they do have."

Marguerite Yourcenar
